Audiology Hearing Aid Dept

Who is the service for

The Audiology service provided by Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust at North Manchester General Hospital is a comprehensive service that delivers adult and children’s assessment, hearing aid management and ongoing rehabilitation. We deliver a 6 day service in both hospital and community. Home visits are provided according to agreed criteria.

The Audiology and Hearing Aid Clinics are able to assess and manage patients who are complaining of hearing, tinnitus and/or balance difficulties.  We are able to offer quality care to patients suffering from conditions such as hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo.

An AQP direct referral service via Choose and Book, and a direct referral service via Choose & Book for Tinnitus, vestibular and wax removal/ear treatment is available to all Greater Manchester Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) who have chosen to commission the service.

Children’s referrals are accepted from parents, carers, education, primary care and other community professionals within the North Manchester CCG boundaries only.

What does the service provide?

We have the knowledge, skills and resources to deliver more complex Audiology services– including vestibular assessment and rehabilitation, tinnitus assessment, diagnosis and management, and assessments for patients with complex needs. We deliver a Nurse Practitioner led wax removal and ear treatment service in both hospital and community settings.  The service works very closely with ENT in the delivery of a comprehensive bone anchored hearing aid service for both adults and children.

The Audiology Department at North Manchester General Hospital also has Registered Hearing Aid Dispensers on site to provide impartial professional advice regarding a full range of private hearing aids eg in the ear models, as an alternative to behind the ear models which are provided by the NHS.

The adult service has a comprehensive Hearing Therapy provision that sees patients with more complex audiological and /or vestibular rehabilitative needs, including hyperacusis, Auditory Processing Disorder, lip reading, communication tactics etc. We also provide deaf awareness training packages.

The adult service works collaboratively with social care services, voluntary bodies, and other Audiology services across Greater Manchester.

Service developments are driven from feedback from patients via regular patient satisfaction questionnaires and a ‘comments’ box.  ‘You said We Did’ Actions are displayed in the waiting area in a transparent process.

The paediatric Audiology service delivers a patient centered service for children from newborn to adolescence who are registered within the North Manchester Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) boundaries. We have close links with education, ENT, Paediatricians and other paediatric Audiology services across Greater Manchester. We work to the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP), Managing Children’s Hearing Aids Services (MCHAS) and National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) standards.

We also have a parent group to gain feedback and opinions on how we can improve services for children with hearing loss / hearing aids.

Who will patients meet?

When invited to an Audiology appointment you will be greeted by a receptionist, and will meet an Audiologist at each appointment.

Any procedure you are asked to undertake will be fully explained beforehand and verbal consent will be requested.

We have a large number of qualified members of staff specialising in the diagnosis and management of hearing loss, tinnitus and/or balance disorders.  We are part of a multidisciplinary team with access to ENT medical staff and further complex diagnosis.

If hearing aids are required we offer a range of high quality devices and individual rehabilitation which will be tailored to each patients’ specific needs.  We can maintain your hearing aids regularly and will update and review hearing aid prescriptions on a regular basis.
