World Cancer Day celebrations at The Royal Oldham
World Cancer Day will take place on 4th February and care organisations across the Northern Care Alliance Group will be hosting activities and events to mark this important awareness day.
World Cancer Day takes place every 4th February and is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). The aim behind the campaign is to raise worldwide awareness of cancer and improve education. The campaign encourages everyone to take collective action to tackle preventable cancer deaths and improve access for everyone to life-saving cancer treatment.
This year's World Cancer Day's theme, 'I Am and I Will', is all about you and your commitment to act. We’re all being asked to make a pledge to take action and work together to help reduce the number of premature deaths from cancer by one third by 2030.
In Oldham, Maggie's Centre will be hosting an open house event in the Norman Stoller Building, where people can access a range of advice and support. The Maggie's Centre team will also be supporting the Macmillan team by hosting a stand at the main entrance to The Royal Oldham Hospital, where they will be asking people to make their pledge to take positive action to tackle cancer.
The Ward F11 team will also be putting an international flavour on the occasion by celebrating with a range of world foods. They’ll be asking patients to make their pledge and pin it onto a world flag to show their support for people living with cancer around the world. You can join their celebrations between 12noon – 2pm on the F11 ward.
Other activities taking also be taking place across the NCA group including:
- The Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Community Cancer Team (based in the Self-Care Hub at Rochdale Infirmary) will have a stand on the link bridge at Rochdale Infirmary to promote their service and highlight the information and support available to people who self-refer into the service. The team will also be visiting Boots in Rochdale on 6th February, where they will be talking about beauty products and skin care particularly suited to cancer patients.
- The North Manchester General Hospital Macmillan team will be providing information and support with a stand in the hospital from 10am – 2pm on 4th February. They will be celebrating the achievements of local cancer teams, providing information and support, and asking everyone to make a personal pledge.
- At Salford Royal Hospital, the Macmillan team will be showcasing their services, including local support groups and will be in the Atrium of the HOPE Building for anyone wishing to pop along and have a chat.
