Patients in Greater Manchester are being invited to come along to a Public and Patient Forum event being hosted by the vascular team at The Royal Oldham Hospital, focussing on a range of common vascular conditions.

The event will take place on Saturday 5th October 2019, 11.00am – 2.30pm in the Education Centre at The Royal Oldham Hospital. It is aimed at all pre and post-operative patients, carers and members of the public with an interest in any vascular condition.

Vascular disease is the collective term for diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatics. Every part of the body where blood flows can be affected by the disease. Vascular disease is as common as cancer and heart disease and actually accounts for 40% of preventable deaths in the UK. Despite this, understanding and awareness about common vascular diseases can be poor.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness about vascular disease and offer reassurance, advice and information on screening programmes, treatment options and management of vascular conditions, to support patients to manage their condition well.

A range of expert vascular and endovascular consultants, surgeons and other health professionals will be on hand to speak to patients and advise on a range of common vascular conditions such as carotid artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, deep vein thrombosis and other aspects of vascular disease including pathways and medical management, diagnosis and treatment of many common vascular conditions.

Directorate Manager for Critical Care and Vascular Services, Tammy Sutcliffe, explains: “The event is an informal opportunity for patients and members of the public to meet our vascular team, share experiences, ask questions and to learn more about the process of living with a vascular condition.

“Last year’s patient information event on the subject of Aortic Abdominal Aneurysm (AAA) was very popular and well attended by patients, who were keen to find out more about how to manage their condition. We hope that patients will take the opportunity to come along and have a chat with the team.”

The Northern Care Alliance Vascular Team is a very busy department currently working across four hospital sites: North Manchester General, The Royal Oldham, Fairfield General and Rochdale Infirmary. On average, the team performs over 1000 procedures a year with excellent outcomes.
