Neurosurgery event – It’s more than brain surgery!
04 October 2019

THE Northern Care Alliance NHS Group’s (NCA) next ‘Medicine for Members’ event is a talk on Neurosurgery on Thursday 24 October, 10.00am, at Salford Royal Hospital.

Consultant Neurosurgeon, Mr Joshi George, will lead the talk, which will give the public an insight to neurosurgery. Mr George will talk about the different conditions and procedures provided at the NCA.

Neurosurgery deals with the surgical management of conditions of the brain and spine. Salford Care Organisation, which runs Salford Royal Hospital, has one of the largest neurosurgery departments in the world. This gives us the opportunity to excel in managing common conditions, as well as specialising in some rare conditions.

Neurosurgery at Salford Royal serves the population of Greater Manchester, which is approximately 3 million. In addition, it is a specialist centre for rare conditions like neurofibromatosis and treats patients from across the UK.

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Group brings together the Salford Royal and Pennine Acute hospital trusts.

Mr Joshi George, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Salford Care Organisation said:

“Neurosurgery is an amazing specialty, which attracts very focussed and committed individuals. However, a good neurosurgeon can only exist as part of a good team, and being based at a great hospital like Salford Royal enables excellence.”

Mr George will talk about the various conditions treated by neurosurgeons like head injuries, brain tumours, seizures, movement disorders, brain fluid problems, pain, skull base tumors, and  disorders of the spine, like disc problems and back pain.

Every year approximately 180 patients are admitted to Salford Royal with severe head injuries as it is a Regional Trauma Centre. In all, neurosurgery receives more than 1,700 new referrals for brain tumours each year.

The free talk will be held on Thursday 24th October, 10.00 am – 11.00 pm in the Frank Rifkin Lecture Theatre, Mayo Building, Salford Royal, Stott Lane, Salford, M6 8HD. The event is one of a series of ‘Medicine for Members’ events arranged to give the public and the NCA’s public members a greater insight into their local hospitals and the services they provide.
