NCA chief exec goes back to the floor at Salford Royal for national Volunteers Week
07 June 2019

RAJ Jain, chief executive officer at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group (NCA), has been working shoulder to shoulder with volunteers at Salford Royal Hospital today.

He decided to go back to the shop floor to show his support for national Volunteers Week (1 to 7 June) and to experience first-hand the tremendous hard work hospital volunteers put in day in day out.

Over 300 volunteers work at Salford Royal, providing over 64,000 free hours each year. Volunteers work in many different departments, providing a helping hand and a warm welcoming smile to patients, visitors and staff alike.

Raj decided to dedicate a large part of his day today walking in their shoes and getting stuck into some of the tasks they do free of charge and from the kindness of their hearts.

He started the day working on the Main Reception desk in the Hope Building at Salford Royal and before long he was assisting a visitor with directions to a ward.

This was quickly followed with him providing a helping hand to a disabled patient who was on route to an appointment. There was a steady flow of enquiries at the front desk and Raj really enjoyed helping out where he could.

Raj Jain, chief executive officer at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group said:

“I have huge respect for the volunteers who work at Salford Royal and at our hospitals in Oldham, Bury, Rochdale and North Manchester. They all work tremendously hard, and the services they provide make a real difference to our hospitals and community services. I would like to thank them all for everything they do, from the bottom of my heart. I have really enjoyed working alongside some of them today; the experience is one that I will look back at fondly and treasure for years to come.”

To celebrate national Volunteers Week the NCA has awarded special Volunteer Star awards to its star volunteers at hospitals in Oldham, Bury, Rochdale and North Manchester. The NCA brings together the Salford Royal and Pennine Acute Hospitals trusts, operates five hospitals and community services, and employs over 17,000 staff.

Volunteers' Week is a chance to celebrate and say thank you for the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK.

It takes place 1-7 June every year and is an opportunity to celebrate volunteering in all its diversity.
