Digital technology used to sustain cancer care at NCA’s local hospitals
THE Northern Care Alliance NHS Group has been using digital technology to ensure cancer care can continue during the COVID-19 pandemic at its local hospitals in Salford, Oldham, Bury and Rochdale.
Dr Roger Prudham, Cancer Clinician and Gastroenterologist at the NCA, which brings together the Salford Royal and Pennine Acute trusts, has led his team and embraced the new technology, including use of video, phone and remote conferencing.
He features in a new video promoting our pioneering digital developments across the organisation. Watch the video here.
The cancer specialist doctor said the digital technology is allowing the organisation to maintain a large amount of consultations and treatments for cancer.
Dr Prudham said:
“We have been working at a furious pace to maintain cancer services using video, phone, and remote conference applications; we have carried out an impressive number of consultations, and have an impressive number of treatments still going through our system. We have had really helpful support from colleagues across the city in keeping services going.”
Janice Gilpin, Speech and Language Therapist at Rochdale Infirmary said the use of digital technology is helping her to continue to treat her patients, including children recovering from cancer.
“I work with children who use communication aids, and up until now have been using video consultations to help parents make modifications on the children’s devices, giving them suggestions how they can maximise communication opportunities, and ideas how to model in particular situations using the child’s device.”
During the pandemic Rochdale Infirmary has been set up so that patients across the region requiring urgent cancer-related procedures can still safely receive treatment. This surgical site remodelling has been undertaken to support the Greater Manchester Cancer Strategy, helping to alleviate pressure on other acute sites across the region.
