Diagnostics Review - Message to patients and their families |
Our patients and the general public may have seen in some media reports about an internal review the Trust is in the process of carrying out involving approximately 400 patients who over the last five years have received a diagnostic test such as a CT scan or x-ray for a variety of conditions. Every year we see hundreds of thousands of patients, many of whom require a scan, x-ray or test to help our clinical staff inform a diagnosis for treatment and further care. Last year we saw of a third of a million A&E urgent care cases across our three A&E departments and Urgent Care Centre, 688,262 outpatients, 117,656 total inpatients and 73,835 day cases. Patient safety and the quality of care we provide to our patients is our top priority. The nature of healthcare means that our doctors and nursing staff are committed to promoting continual learning and improved clinical practice in line with national guidance and best practice. We are currently undertaking a review around some of our x-ray and CT scans which has involved looking at our clinical processes, policies and practice. This is to ensure that these tests for our patients are being undertaken promptly and the reports are being received by the appropriate healthcare professional so that diagnosis and necessary treatment can commence. As part of this work, we have looked at data regarding 400 patient cases over the past five year where we want to double check all tests were carried out correctly. Where a patient has been identified as a case, and where there is an issue identified, the patient or the patient’s relative has been contacted directly by the Trust. Our patients and the public should be reassured that our services are safe. |
