New Bereavement Centres open at The Royal Oldham Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital |

Two brand new Bereavement Centres have opened at The Royal Oldham Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital. The Oldham centre opened to the public for the first time on Thursday 8 June 2017 following an opening event, which took place at 2pm at the Chalmers Keddie building. The ‘Swan Suite’ Bereavement Centre at North Manchester opened its doors to the public for the first time on Friday 12 May 2017. |

Rochdale Infirmary, Day Surgery Unit – Free public talk and tour 11 July |

On Tuesday 11 July 2017 (10am – 11am), staff from Rochdale Infirmary will be hosting a free public ‘talk and tour’ of the newly expanded Day Surgery Unit and Theatres at Rochdale Infirmary. The event will be an opportunity for staff, the public and Trust members to learn more about the different surgical procedures carried out at the unit. |

Important information regarding urine sample collection for Microbiology tests |

Samples of urine sent to Microbiology for microscopy, culture and susceptibility testing should be sent in containers with preservative (Boric acid). The preservative ensures that results reflect the bacteria present at the time of sample collection and will therefore minimize the effect of any delays in transport on bacterial overgrowth. This in turn will have a major positive impact on the quality of the culture result issued. The overall aim is to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics in patients whose samples show moderate bacterial growth where results are often difficult to interpret in conjunction with the clinical picture. It is being introduced as part of our antibiotic stewardship strategy and it is envisaged that this approach will potentially reduce cases of CDI in Acute and Primary care. Good sample collection is vital in order to obtain an accurate result that is clinically relevant; contamination makes interpretation difficult and may lead to unnecessary antibiotic treatment. Samples should be collected into a primary receptacle and decanted into a Green Urine Monovette tube available from NHS Logistics (KTH123). Alternatively a 30 ml red topped universal container (KCP885) can be used. |
