NHS 70th birthday celebrations across the Northern Care Alliance

On 5 July we celebrated the 70th birthday of the National Health Service. It was also 70 years since Social Care was created by the National Assistance Act 1948. Lots of fun and exciting events and activities took place across our Care Organisations, in our hospitals and across our community services, to mark this special occasion and key milestone in its history. This included three events open to the public and our members held at Oldham, North Manchester General and at Salford Royal.

Acute Clinical Services Strategy (CSS) and the future of NMGH

Work continues on the plans for Salford Royal (SRFT) to formally acquire our Royal Oldham, Fairfield and Rochdale sites as part of our Northern Care Alliance NHS Group. These arrangements support plans to create a ‘shared hospital service’ operating across the North East Sector (Oldham, Bury and Rochdale communities) – associated with Salford. This is being undertaken in partnership with local CCGs and Local Authorities as part of a commissioner-led acute Clinical Services Strategy (CSS). The strategy is looking at future hospital provision, pathways for specialist services and new models of care to support people in their local community with the involvement of clinical staff.

Alongside this Clinical Services Strategy for Bury, Oldham and Rochdale, plans are still for NMGH to transfer and become part of Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) in the second part of 2019/20. This proposal is part of the plan to create a Single Hospital Service for the City of Manchester and Trafford, with involvement of Manchester City Council and Manchester Health and Care Commissioning.

TUPE transfer of North Manchester Community staff to Manchester Local Care Organisation (LCO)

Since 1 April 2018, our North Manchester community services provided by North Manchester Care Org have been working under the umbrella of Manchester Local Care Organisation, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). On 1 July, around 380 PAT staff providing these services transferred to become employees of MFT. We are not transferring any support services/contracts at this stage. A service level agreement (SLA) between The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (PAT) and MFT is being finalised to ensure the continued provision of support by PAT in a wide range of areas (incl pharmacy and IMT) for those staff transferring, and for the services they provide. The transfer of the community teams will not affect any of our patient pathways or the support services that are provided to the community team. There will be no changes to contact details for any community services – please continue to use existing phone numbers, email and postal addresses until further notice. Staff wishing to contact the North Manchester community on-call manager out of hours should continue to call PAT switchboard.

Important information for patients re radiology appointments

Please can GPs and patients note that children accompanying adults for Radiology examinations will not be allowed into the x-ray room due to radiation implications, and nor can staff look after them unaccompanied. Please can GPs remind patients that if they are attending Radiology for any imaging procedures, to arrange child care if necessary, or bring another adult to accompany them. Thanks.

Post vasectomy semen analysis acceptance criteria changes

As from 1 August 2018, PVSA samples should be delivered to the Andrology Department, Pathology, The Royal Oldham Hospital, within three hours of production. Samples should be examined within four hours of production when assessing for presence of sperm. Samples can be delivered between the hours of 9am-4pm, Monday to Friday.

This is in-line with current guidelines (2016 Laboratory guidelines for Post Vasectomy semen analysis: Association of Biomedical Andrologists, the British Andrology Society and the British Association of Urological Surgeons). Samples received outside of this time-frame will be rejected.

Podiatry Direct is now available online

Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Community Podiatry Service’s patient self-referral platform, Podiatry Direct, is now available online. Patients can now refer themselves into the service by visiting a secure web link on their electronic devices (e.g. PCs, phones, tablets): www.penninecare.nhs.uk/podiatrydirect 

Podiatry Direct online will give greater support for patients to make autonomous decisions about their foot healthcare. It will also help speed up access into podiatry services, without the need to see a GP first. For more information about online referral please contact the single point of access (SPOA) on 0161 716 5888.

North Manchester community team receives national award for homeless wound service

A pioneering NHS community team providing wound care for homeless and hard to reach groups in North Manchester has won a prestigious national award for their work after nomination by one of the city’s MPs.

Manchester Local Care Organisation’s Community Tissue Viability Service (part of North Manchester Care Organisation until April 2018) won the national Person-Centred Care Champion Award at the NHS70 Parliamentary Awards in recognition of their work with these groups. They were nominated by Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell and won the regional award for their work before going on to the national awards.

Trust security team recognised as best in the country

The Pennine Acute security team has won a national award for ‘Best Team,’ proving they are a ‘safe pair of hands’ for staff, patients and visitors alike.

The security team, provided by MITIE, won the ‘Best Team’ award at the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) awards, beating off stiff competition from public and private sector security teams up and down the country.

Rochdale matron is named as Queen’s Nurse

A Rochdale community matron has been given the prestigious title of Queen’s Nurse by community nursing charity The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

Samantha Clawson who has over 19 years’ community experience, has been a community matron in the Rochdale West integrated nursing team for a year.  Prior to this she was a district nursing sister in Middleton and Rochdale.

Alliance nurses get honorary doctorates

Elaine Inglesby-Burke CBE and Fiona Murphy MBE, two senior nurses from the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) NHS Group, have both been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Bolton.

Elaine is Chief Nursing Officer at the NCA and Fiona is Associate Director of Nursing for End of Life, Bereavement, Organ and Tissue Donation.

You’d better bee-lieve it!

We’re buzzed to announce that North Manchester General Hospital will be hosting a giant bee as part of the Bee in the Citypublic art trail winding its way across Manchester this summer.

The bee – called ‘Bee-yond Expectations’ - will be near Entrance 1, for the women and children’s units, and will be unveiled on Monday 23 July, when the full trail opens to the public.
