- Accident and Emergency Departments are provided on some hospital sites to provide a high level of specialist assessment to those presenting with serious illness or injury.
- Antenatal and Newborn Screening

- Acute Medicine Bury
- The Acute Medical Team provides a high level of specialist assessment and treatment to those admitted with medical emergencies.
- Anaesthetics
- The primary role of Anaesthetists is to see a patient on the ward on the day of surgery to discuss the type of anaesthesia available.
- Antenatal Care
- When a pregnant woman is asked to attend an antenatal clinic at a hospital, it is usually for routine examinations, tests and an ultrasound scan, which helps to make sure both the woman and her baby are healthy, as well as providing an estimated date for the birth.
- Anti-Coagulation Services
- The service provides clinics for patients to attend to have point of care blood tests for International Ratio ( INR) which determines the dose of the anticoagulant drug between blood tests.
- Audiology Hearing Aid Dept
- The Audiology service provided by Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust at North Manchester General Hospital is a comprehensive service that delivers adult and children’s assessment, hearing aid management and ongoing rehabilitation.
- Balance Clinic
- Patients may be referred into the balance clinic by a concerned GP or by an ENT consultant as part of their assessment of the patient.
- Bereavement Service
- The Bereavement Service is for families and friends of patients who have passed away in hospital. The service performs a variety of administrative functions following the death of a patient e.g. arranging the issue of the Medical Cause of Death Certificate and other bereavement related paperwork.
- Biochemistry Lab Services
- Samples for Clinical Biochemistry laboratory investigations are received and processed from both General Practitioners within Primary Care and Consultant led in-patient and out-patient services within the hospitals.
- Blood Tests - Phlebotomy
- Phlebotomists take blood, as requested by the doctor or nurse, from patients on our wards for further tests to be undertaken in the laboratory.
- Booking and Scheduling
- The Booking and Scheduling Service operates a Trust-wide patient appointment centre that undertakes the booking and scheduling of patient contacts including community, outpatient and diagnostic appointments, admissions for inpatient and day case procedures and maintains the Trust’s Directory of Services.
- Bowel Cancer Screening
- The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme offers screening every two years to all men and women aged 60 to 74.
- Breast Imaging
- The service is for patients who are admitted to the Trust inpatient wards and Day Services Departments and for patients attending the Emergency Departments and the Urgent Care Centre at Rochdale Infirmary.
- Breast Clinics/Surgery
- This service is for patients directly referred in by their GP for any breast related condition.
- Bury Integrated MSK Service
- The Bury Integrated MSK Service provides a specialist opinion for all patients with musculoskeletal disorders referred by their GP. These include such conditions as neck and low back pain, shoulder disorders eg frozen shoulder/impingement, sports injuries as well as those requiring long term management and persistent pain.
- Cancer Support
- The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre is a calm, quiet relaxed environment away from the wards and clinical areas.
- Cancer - Maggie's Centre - Oldham
- Maggie's Centre, in the grounds of the Royal Oldham Hospital provides emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends.
- Cardiology
- Cardiology provides a range of complex diagnostic and enhanced specialist interventional procedures for patients with coronary heart disease, heart rhythm problems, heart failure, structural heart disease.
- Care of the Elderly
- The Care of the elderly and rehabilitation service aims to provide acute and rehabilitation care for the elderly residents of Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and North Manchester.
- Carers Service
- There are two Carers Centres available to offer advice and guidance to carers in the hospital environment either as a patient or as a visitor.
- Catering
- Catering services for patients, visitors and staff.
- Cellular Pathology
- Cellular Pathology provides a Histology, Diagnostic Cytology and Andrology service to General Practitioners within Primary Care and to Consultant led services with the hospitals within The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care
- The Spiritual Care Multi-faith Chaplaincy team provides spiritual, pastoral and religious support for patients, carers and members of staff within the Trust.
- Chemical Pathology
- The department runs a Lipid Clinic that patients will be referred to by their GP.
- Chemotherapy
- The Macmillan Chemotherapy Team administer chemotherapy, a key part in the treatment of cancer. They also provide education and support to patients and their relatives throughout treatment.
- Chest
- This service is for all patients either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with respiratory disease and the associated conditions of the lungs and respiratory muscles.
- Children's Services
- Assessment, care and treatment of children and young people with medical problems or illness.
- Cleaning
- Domestic and housekeeping services provided by a dedicated 520-strong team responsible for 184,000 square metres of premises.
- Clinical Assessment Unit
- The team on the Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU) provide assessment, treatment and, in some cases, onward referral to people who arrive at hospital with a moderate illness.
- Colorectal Surgery
- Patients with diseases of the colon, rectum and anus including rectal bleeding, acute anal pain, weight loss, palpable PR mass or abdominal mass.
- Continence Service

- The Trust’s Healthy Weight Team is part of the Community Dietetics department and serves individuals who are overweight and live in, or are registered with a GP in Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale.
- Hepato-Pancreato Biliary Team
- Hepato-Pancreato Biliary Surgery provides treatment for malignant and benign disease of the liver and biliary tree, including gall bladder surgery, pancreatic surgery liver surgery and radiological intervention, such as chemotherapy.
- Infectious Diseases
- This service is for patients with (known or presumed) imported, community-acquired or hospital-acquired infections. Conditions include HIV, hepatitis C and B, infections of the intestines, skin, muscles, joints, or respiratory, urinary, cardiovascular and nervous systems (e.g. meningitis and encephalitis), TB, malaria, typhoid, sepsis and blood-stream infections.

- This service is for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

- This service is for all patients either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with respiratory disease and the associated conditions of the lungs and respiratory muscles.
- Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre
- The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre is a calm, quiet relaxed environment away from the wards and clinical areas.
- Macmillan Living with and Beyond Cancer Programme
- Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support have come together to address the cancer care challenges faced by patients and their carers. They have created a “Living With and Beyond Cancer Project” LWABC which aims to improve cancer services to meet the unmet needs of patients.

- Samples for Microbiology and Virology laboratory investigations are received and processed from both General Practitioners within Primary Care and Consultant led in-patient and out-patient services within Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Mortuary Services
- This comprises of body stores at The Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary, Fairfield General Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital for the reception and storage of bodies for people who have died in Oldham, Rochdale, Bury and North Manchester. The mortuary also handles deaths that have been referred to the coroner or deaths where a death certificate cannot be issued.
- MRI Scan
- The service is for patients who are admitted to the Trust inpatient wards and Day Services Departments and for patients attending the Emergency Departments and the Urgent Care Centre at Rochdale Infirmary.
- Navigator Service
- The Navigator Service assists clients who are medically fit to be discharged from hospital, however, they may not be safe to return home for various reasons.
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit The Royal Oldham Hospital
- Provides the highest level of specialist intensive care for the sickest infants and preterm babies from within Pennine Acute Hospitals and also accepts referrals for intensive care from out of the greater Manchester area.
- Neonatal Unit level 2 - North Manchester General Hospital
- Provides short term intensive care for those babies requiring the support of a Local Neonatal Unit.
- Neurophysiology
- Patients are referred from a variety of specialties, the main ones being Neurology, Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and orthopaedics. Patients are referred for a variety of reasons including unexplained blackouts, seizures, excessive day time sleepiness, inflammation of the muscles and trapped nerves.
- Neuro Surgery
- This is a ‘local’ service provided by a Salford Consultant at the Pennine Acute NHS Trust.
- Floyd Unit - Intermediate Neuro rehabilitation Unit
- The Floyd unit is an 18 bedded specialist Intermediate Neuro-rehabilitation unit – that cares for people who have rehabilitation needs after brain injury or other neurological impairment.
- North Manchester Treatment Centre (NMTC)
- The North Manchester Treatment Centre is the ‘Ambulatory Care Hub’ for North Manchester.
- Nuclear Medicine
- The service is for patients who are admitted to the Trust inpatient wards and Day Services Departments and for patients attending the Emergency Departments and the Urgent Care Centre at Rochdale Infirmary.

- The Oasis Unit at Rochdale Infirmary is a 5 bed bespoke medical unit for patients with a medical condition who are also living with dementia.
- Occupational Health
- The Mediscreen Occupational Health & Wellbeing Service is for all staff employed by Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Occupational Therapy
- The Occupational Therapy service provides services to in-patient and out-patients across all Pennine sites. Occupational Therapists assist people to gain maximum independence in activities of daily living
- Ophthalmology
- This service is for all patients either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with conditions affecting their vision.
- Oral Surgery
- This service is for all patients either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with conditions or diseases that may affect the mouth, jaws, face, and neck.
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- This service is for all adult patients that have either been referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with all conditions and diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system. Paediatric patients will only be seen as referrals form the emergency department.
- Orthoptics
- Orthoptists investigate, diagnose and manage disorders of binocular vision and abnormalities of eye movement.
- Orthodontics
- This service is for all patients either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with conditions or diseases that may affect the mouth, jaws, face, and neck. This service will see both adult and paediatric patients.
- Orthotics
- Orthotics is a service that provides devices called Orthoses. These are usually given to help to prevent or correct deformity and/or improve function.
- Outpatient departments
- Outpatient clinics provide appointments for consultation, diagnostic tests, minor treatments and investigations with the aim of determining a diagnosis.
- Overseas Visitors Team
- The overseas visitor team deal with patients who are visitors to the UK or a temporary resident and are seeking NHS treatment at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Paediatric Audiology Service
- The Paediatric Audiology Service performs hearing tests and provides hearing rehabilitation for children 0 – 16 years.

- The Service is free and confidential to everyone. Self-referrals, or referrals from any health care professional are welcome.
- Silver Heart Unit
- Patients who require a coronary angiogram or a Percutaneous Coronary Intervention will be admitted to the unit.
- Sleep Service
- Service provided for patients with Sleep Related Disorders.
- Speech and Language Therapy
- The Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service assess, diagnose and treat adults suspected of having a swallowing and/or communication impairment.
- Sterile Services
- This service specialises in reprocessing of reusable surgical instruments.
- Stroke
- This service provides acute care (including Thrombolysis) for patients who have suffered a stroke, treatment and investigations for Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) and also inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation.
- Switchboard
- The service is normally the first contact for the general public when calling the Trust.
- Tinnitus Clinic
- The tinnitus service is available to those patients who complain of troublesome tinnitus.
- Transport
- The Service is for both clinical and non-clinical professionals to ensure they have a means to transport supplies, mail, samples and similar items they require to perform the services they are providing.
- Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
- This service is for all adult patients that have either been referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with all conditions and diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system. Paediatric patients will only be seen as referrals form the emergency department.
- Ultrasound
- The service is for patients who are admitted to the Trust inpatient wards and Day Services Departments and for patients attending the Emergency Departments and the Urgent Care Centre at Rochdale Infirmary.
- Upper GI General Surgery
- Upper GI General Surgery includes treatment for dyspepsia, dysphagia and benign bilary disease e.g. gall stones.
- Urology
- This service is for all patients, male and female, either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with benign and malignant conditions of the urinary tract (kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, urethra) or the male reproductive system (penis, testicles, fertility).
- Vascular Inpatient Surgery
- This service is for all patients either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with conditions that may affect the blood vessels (blockage or dilatation) to any part of the body, except the heart. The service also treats varicose veins, lymphodema and foot complications of diabetes.
- Voluntary Services
- This service is to recruit potential volunteers and support existing volunteers.
- Wolstenholme Unit
- The unit provides 24 community beds. It can be accessed by any adult aged 18 years and over who resides or is registered with a GP in the Heywood , Middleton and Rochdale area and is part of a wider intermediate care and reablement service.

Integrated neighbourhood teams also offer a borough wide provision of services which includes; Bladder & Bowel Specialist service; Tissue Viability Service; Community Neuro-Rehabilitation; Early Support Stroke Discharge; Speech & Language; Amputee; Centralized Falls; Enhanced Respiratory Self-Management Service.
