Venue MS Teams
Category Workforce Event

LGBT History Month is celebrated in February each year with the aim to increase the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, their history and their lives. It also looks to raise awareness of issues faced by LGBT+ people through education and it works to promote the social, emotional and mental wellbeing of the diverse LGBT+ community.

The theme of this year’s LGBT+ History Month is “Body, Mind, Spirit”. The Northern Care Alliance LGBTQ+ Staff Network has arranged a programme of events in collaboration with other NHS organisations from across Greater Manchester to engage with NHS workers and service users. The events will take place throughout February and there are many ways for people to get involved.

The programme of events includes:

  • Recognising LGBTQ+ Inclusivity in the Workplace

The NCA LGBTQ+ Staff Network invites all teams and departments to tell us about how they have helped create an LGBTQ+ inclusive environment for their colleagues and service users. Examples could include a change a team has made to ensure inclusive language is used at all times or how a team has created an environment where colleagues feel safe to be their authentic selves.

  • LGBT Book Club

Join the Northern Care Alliance LGBTQ+ Staff Network for their LGBT History Month book club

We've chosen to read Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin, the first in the series of books originally published in 1978. It’s a lighthearted read and it will be interesting to hear others thoughts as to what resonates or differs from LGBTQI life now in Greater Manchester compared to then. It is available as an ebook, or via Greater Manchester virtual libraries on “borrow box”. Please consider if you are going to purchase the text using a local independent bookshop many of whom also deliver during lockdown.
