“I had a consultation, diagnosis and treatment within 40 minutes”
An enhanced service for Bury patients with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions is seeing patients getting speedier treatment which frees up additional GP appointment slots.
The Bury Integrated MSK Service which was developed in partnership with NHS Bury Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and is run by the Trust, provides a more timely and appropriate access route for patients living
in Bury with a range of MSK conditions such as neck and low back pain, shoulder disorders and sports injuries.
The service sees patients within the physiotherapy service at Fairfield General Hospital. They have their initial consultation with an advanced physio practitioner who assesses their MSK condition in the same way that they would be if they were referred to an orthopaedic surgeon, and then depending on what is required, refer them for diagnostic investigations such as MRI or ultrasound scans.
Kristine Harwood from Bury was suffering with a pain in her left arm and had lack of range of movement which was diagnosed as frozen shoulder. Referred into the MSK service via her GP, Kristine said: “The referral was very quick. I had an appointment within two weeks and then received a 40 minute consultation with an advanced physiotherapy practitioner,
Deborah Bancroft. She instantly made me feel comfortable and relaxed and we discussed the journey of pain that I had been on. I had an examination to show the range of movement I could achieve and given the option of having a steroid injection.
“I didn’t have to wait for another appointment. I had the injection there and then and was given an appointment to attend a physiotherapy session at Fairfield which again made me feel at ease and relaxed as Caroline the physio knew all about my case from Deborah’s notes. We went through some exercises and I was given a sheet of well explained exercises to do at home.
“The service provided by the MSK has been excellent. I had a consultation, diagnosis and treatment within a 40 minute consultation and the follow-on service with physio was also provided very quickly. All the staff are excellent and make up a great team.”
