Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service - North Manchester

Who is the service for?

The out-patient musculoskeletal service treats patients who are referred from their GP as well as hospital consultants.  Consultant referrals are most commonly from orthopaedics, rheumatology, pain medicine and A&E.  Patients with new injuries, such as sprains, strains and broken bones are commonly seen, as well patients with long standing conditions, such as back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis and shoulder pain.

What does the service provide?

Patients will undergo a thorough assessment and be given an accurate diagnosis.  Patients will then be advised as to the best way to improve their symptoms and return to their normal activities.  This will usually involve a structured exercise programme and may include other treatments where appropriate. Patients who have had surgery or lower-limb injuries may be referred to specialist rehabilitation groups to help them return to sporting activities.

We also offer specialist pain management programmes for patients with long-standing pain conditions.  These aim to help people understand the causes of their pain, help them return to their normal activities and manage their condition independently in the long term.

Who will patients meet while under your department/service’s care?

When attending the physiotherapy department patients will initially meet a member of the reception team, who will arrange their appointments for them.  They will then be assessed and treated by their physiotherapist, sometimes with the assistance of a physiotherapy assistant or physiotherapy student.

When is the service available?

The out-patient musculoskeletal service runs Monday-Friday from 8am until 4pm.

Where is the service provided?

Large community musculoskeletal physiotherapy clinics are run at the Cornerstone Centre in Beswick and Radcliffe Primary Care Centre.  In addition, small clinics are run at several GP practices in the Bury area.
