Healthy Weight Team

The Trust’s Healthy Weight Team is part of the Community Nutrition and Dietetics Team and supports children and adults to prevent or reduce any weight gain in Heywood, Middleton, Rochdale and the Pennines. The services provided are part of the Living Well Programme delivered by Big Life. The team consist of registered dietitians, nutritionists, an active lifestyle advisor and dietetic assistants. We have a range of programmes and courses designed to help families, adults and children looking to achieve a healthier weight.

Who is the service for?

The service is available for adults, children and families. There are a range of programmes to suit most needs and ages available.

Adults

If your BMI is over 25- 39.9 with no other medical conditions  or BMI 25 to 34.5 with medical conditions we can offer SlimPossible, a 12 week programme of healthy eating and physical activity. Each weekly session is 1.5 hours long. The course focuses on making the right choices, understanding food labels, portion sizes, facts about fat and sugars, setting achievable goals and incorporates a fun gentle exercise session.

If your BMI is 35 and over with medical conditions or BMI 40 without medical conditions we offer New Weighs groups. Sessions run every two weeks over 6 months. The programme also includes a bariatric education session for those wishing to have surgery.

For people who don’t wish to attend a group or can’t make the venues or times, there are limited numbers of individual consultations available. These take place with a registered dietitian on a 6 month programme focused on behaviour change to promote weight loss

Children

We have a range of fun and exciting programmes for children and their families for all ages.

Health Exercise Nutrition for the Really Young is designed for children aged 0-4 years and their parents and carers

A fun, interactive and very informative 8 week course for parents and carers with children under 5 that takes place throughout the community. The course gives all parents and carers ideas about healthy living for the whole family. Week by week, participant explore topics including parenting and relationships, praise and rewards, healthy eating, portion sizes and being active.

Energy Club (Run In partnership with Link4Life)

The Energy Club is made up of fun, educational and active sessions for the whole family over a number of weeks to promote a healthy lifestyle. The Energy club includes interesting and inactive nutrition education sessions for parents/carers as well as physical activities for the children

Junior skills (Run in partnership with Link4Life)

Junior skills is a fun and engaging session for children aged 5-12 years helping them to have a healthy and more active lifestyle. Children will regularly get to try out new activities and sports such as judo, tennis, trampolining, climbing and much more.

You can self -refer or your GP, practice nurse or other health professional to refer you to the service.

When is the department open?

The service is available from Monday to Friday, but Saturday sessions are available. Clinics and sessions are carried out morning, afternoon and evening as needed,  in a variety of venues across the borough.
