Who is the service for?

Clinical Haematology is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with diseases of blood, bone marrow and lymphoid systems. This wide range of malignant and non-malignant disorders includes:

Non-malignant:

Hereditary disorders - Haemoglobinopathies, membrane defects.

Acquired disorders - Anaemia’s, immune cytopenias, marrow failure syndromes.

Coagulation and thrombotic disorders.

Malignant:

Acute and chronic leukaemia’s.

Lymphoma/lymphoproliferative disorders.

Myeloma/plasma cell dyscrasias.

Myeloproliferative disorders.

Myelodysplastic syndromes.

What does the service provide?

The Consultant Haematologists clinical role within this speciality is to diagnose individuals with primary haematological disorders and to instigate appropriate treatment in the clinical workplace: outpatient clinic, day case unit or inpatient ward. As the range of disorders under their remit is wide, the treatment options are diverse and range from vitamin supplementation to intensive inpatient based chemotherapy.

Who will patients meet?

All our services are supported by a multidisciplinary clinical team including specialist haematology consultant and medical staff, specialist clinical haematology nursing staff including McMillan nursing staff, social workers and Health Care Assistants.

When is the service available?

In patient services operate 24/7 at F11 ROH and J5 NMGH.  Haematology Clinics in the Day Case Unit are held on all days of the week on F11 at ROH. Some outpatient’s clinics are held at Fairfield General Hospital.
