Who is the service for?
The department of General Surgery accepts emergency admissions at NMGH and ROH, and presently both sites are on-call 24/7. This service is for all patients either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with benign and malignant conditions of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. It will also see patients referred in by their GP with other soft tissue conditions on the thorax and abdomen including the groin, not related to the gastro-intestinal conditions e.g. abscesses and herniae.
Non-emergency referrals are seen in OPD for a wide range of benign and malignant conditions.
What does the service provide?
Please do not refer the following as General Surgery. Colorectal and anal referrals are seen by the colorectal surgeons and by open access endoscopy by gastroenterologists. Varicose veins and venous ulcers are seen by the vascular surgeons. Patients with Upper GI symptoms (dyspepsia dysphagia) are best referred through the open access endoscopy service. Lesions on the head and neck are best referred to the Head and Neck Surgeons. Thyroids are now referred to ENT.
Open General Surgical referrals should include all abdominal hernia, skin lumps on the chest, abdomen and groin and proven gallbladder disease.

Nurse Practitioners , Specialist Nurses , Surgeons, Radiologists and Radiographers, Endoscopy staff , Theatre staff , Nursing staff , Healthcare assistants.
When is the service available?
The General Surgery service is available 7 days a week for all emergency referrals and Monday to Friday for non-emergency outpatient referrals from your GP.
Where is the service provided?
There is in-patient and day case surgery undertaken on all four sites, with emergency surgery only being performed on the Royal Oldham and North Manchester sites.
