Blood Tests - Phlebotomy

UCLH DAY 3 BLOOD 33 10259

Clinical staff can tell a lot about a patient’s health and recovery from blood tests, so these may be an important part of their care. Many different staff are trained to take blood on our wards and departments and phlebotomists belong to a small team who assist with this.

Why might patients be referred to this service?

Requests are received from any clinician or practitioner across the clinical areas in the hospital and in some cases GPs will also refer to the hospital service.

What will happen and who will you meet?

If you attend the blood sampling lounges you will meet one of our Phlebotomists, who are trained in taking blood samples with the minimum of discomfort. They appreciate that some patients may be nervous about these tests, but will do everything they can to make it as quick and as stress-free as possible.

No diagnostic test is without risk and further information about Having a Blood test can be found in our useful information leaflet on our Patient Information leaflet pages - Blood test Information leaflet

Patients must have a  completed request card for the phlebotomist to use the correct sample bottles and for the laboratory to process these.
