Acute Respiratory Assessment Service (ARAS) COPD support team - North Manchester

Who is the service for?

Patients with COPD requiring acute care during an exacerbation of their condition or ongoing chronic support to enable them to manage their chest condition. Referrals come from GPs, Practice nurses, Respiratory Consultants and acute wards at NMGH.

Acute home care – from hospital or to avoid admission

Chronic support

Pulmonary rehabilitation

Quality Assurance of Spirometry in GP practices

Respiratory Support/education to healthcare professionals

Who will patients meet while under your department/service’s care?

Administrator – Takes telephone calls and makes appointments

Nurses – assess patients in hospital/clinic, deliver home care and education in patients homes

Physiotherapists – deliver exercise programmes at patients homes and in some local community centres

Assistant Practitioner – assists nurses/physiotherapist and does home visits

When is the service available?

Office Hours are 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday

For patients known to the service we also cover 5pm – 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am – 1pm Weekends and bank holidays

Where is the service provided?

Patients homes, community venues and visits to acute hospital wards.
