Specialist nurse wins Trust’s Patients’ Choice Award voted by public
AN inflammatory bowel disease specialist nurse has been chosen as the winner of the prestigious Patients’ Choice Award at The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust’s annual staff awards event.
The Staff Awards 2014 consisted of 13 categories which recognised the very best of patient care, dedication and innovation across the Trust’s four hospital sites and its 9,000 staff.
At a special final awards ceremony at the Sheridan Suite in Manchester, Olympic rower and endurance adventurer James Cracknell OBE, announced that Tina Law had won the award.
The award gave the general public and members of Pennine Acute Trust the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ and publicly recognise the outstanding care and treatment given to either them or a relative or close friend.
The public were invited to nominate any nurse, doctor, midwife, therapist, receptionist or other member of staff who had looked after them during an outpatient visit, day treatment or overnight, or longer hospital stay. The nominee will have shown exceptional patient care; this could be great kindness, professional expertise or expert patient care.
Tina who works in gastroenterology across the Trust’s four hospitals – Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, The Royal Oldham Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary, was nominated by four members of the public.
Each nomination describes her as being very helpful, kind and supportive to patients in her care, with one nominator saying that they do not know what they would have done without Tina’s help. She provides excellent care, often going the extra step to make sure she provides all the information which patients and families need to maintain good health.
Tina said: “I feel very honoured to win the Patients’ Choice Award at this year’s Staff Awards. My role as an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Specialist Nurse puts me in a very privileged position; working with and getting to know patients throughout their journey with their chronic disease.
“We work together to improve and maintain their health, and offer support when treatment doesn’t go as planned. To be recognised by the patients for doing a job I love is fantastic. I am the only IBD nurse in the Trust, covering all four sites. I wouldn’t be able to do this without the support of the doctors, nurses and management, but especially without the day to day support of the gastro nursing team secretary Janice Lawton.
“The evening was a fantastic event; the Rock Choir was awesome! It is nice to work in a Trust that puts on these events to show its appreciation for the staff.”
Presenting the awards, Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell OBE, said: “It was a privilege and honour for me to meet and congratulate local NHS staff who work extremely hard every day to care and treat people and who have been voted by their colleagues and the public for their care, compassion and skill. I believe it’s important we take the opportunity to thank and recognise the efforts of NHS staff as they do a tremendous job. It was a great occasion.”
Dr Gillian Fairfield, Chief Executive of the Trust added: “It is a huge privilege to be Chief Executive of this Trust working with so many dedicated and professional colleagues. Our staff awards are just one way of publicly recognising and thanking those who have demonstrated exceptional care, skill and innovation and for all of their hard work and commitment. It helps us as an organisation be proud of what we do and what we can achieve.
“It was a fantastic event and lovely to see so many staff across all departments and job roles enjoying themselves and celebrating their achievements, whether as a team or individual.”
