New Sensory Equipment for Paediatric Radiology Department at Royal Oldham Hospital

New Sensory Equipment for Paediatric Radiology Department at Royal Oldham Hospital
24 October 2017

MedEquip4Kids are proud to be working with the Radiology Department at The Royal Oldham Hospital.

The Radiology Department along with support from MedEquip4Kids has recently created a paediatric ultrasound scan room, which is a perfect child-friendly environment helping young patients to relax before the scan starts.

The new room has been adapted with hot air balloon artwork, ceiling inserts and seating. The addition of bubble tubes, UV fibre optic strands and projected lighting effects and images will provide sensory distraction during treatment. Toys and books will complete the upgrade and provide entertainment during waiting times. This will reduce stress and anxiety in children.

Hospitals can be frightening places and when a child is anxious or distressed, it is harder for medical staff to treat them. This can affect the child’s health and ability to recover. This equipment will benefit more than 1,500 children a year, giving them a better experience of hospital and aiding their recovery. Marcia Wild, Ultrasound Service Manager at The Royal Oldham Hospital said: “The paediatric ultrasound team would like to thank everyone involved in transforming our ultrasound scan room into a bright and engaging room for children. It means children can easily be distracted whilst being scanned due to the engaging and stimulating equipment and toys provided. This makes the scan so much easier for our staff and the child’s experience becomes far more tolerable and pleasant.”

This was made possible by the amazing generosity of Simplyhealth and Stephen Poole’s 999 Battle of the Badges White Collar Boxing event. This was an amazing night at which everyone had a great time, including the boxers. Stephen Poole, a paramedic for the NWAS said “I would like to thank everyone who supported me. Everyone who attended, the boxers who trained hard and showed true bravery, the support crew who helped the boxers and the event crew who helped stage the event. I see the amazing work MedEquip4Kids does at the hospitals I visit and the huge impact it has on children. I wanted to give something back to the community as I believe children deserve the best start in life. MedEquip4Kids do amazing work and I want to continue their legacy”

Roger Cotton, Head of Charitable Giving at Simplyhealth comments: “We’re delighted to help fund some of the sensory equipment for the radiology department’s waiting area. MedEquip4Kids provides a fantastic service in ensuring children and young people receive the best possible care when unwell. We hope the items will make the experience as relaxed and calming as possible for what can be an anxious time for the whole family.”

This donation is the latest in a long list of charitable support that MedEquip4Kids have given to Royal Oldham Hospital and we are continuing our legacy  with a new appeal for a Sensory Voyager . Please support us?. We have our annual Slattery’s Chocolate Extravaganza coming up on the 6th December. To purchase tickets, call 0161 798 1600 or log on to www.medequip4kids.org.uk and look under the events section.

The organisation was set up in 1985 by a couple, after their daughter became seriously ill with meningitis and was treated at Booth Hall Children’s Hospital in Manchester, where she made a full recovery.

At the time, the hospital was unable to afford some vital items of equipment, so to show their gratitude to the hospital that saved their daughter’s life, the couple began fundraising for the equipment. Since then, MedEquip4Kids has raised over £20 million to care for around 115,000 children a year at hospitals across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cumbria, Lancashire, Yorkshire and beyond.
