VISITORS, staff and patients are invited to a special ‘field to plate’ tasting session on Wednesday 19th April, 10 am – 12 noon, at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

Food and beverage services play an important role in the treatment of patients and are an essential part of patient care.   Providing good Nutrition and Hydration can encourage patients to eat and drink well, and gives them the nutrients and liquid intake they require to recover from surgery or illness, as Florence Nightingale said many years ago “Food is a Medicine”.   

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust provides a range of menus to cater for all differing conditions as well as cultural and religious beliefs. The trust also provides pictorial menus to assist patients in choosing the meals they most enjoy. Each ward has a folder providing information from menu, allergens and services times readily available to peruse

Howard Cartledge, Trust  Catering Lead  at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We want to explain to our patients, visitors and relatives, how the food we serve on our wards is locally sourced, and give people a chance to sample the food served on the wards each day and to give us their views."

The number of meals provided annually to patients in the Trust is 1,479,000 which equates to us feeding 1480 patients three meals a day. We also provide meals to patients at Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust,

The products provided on our menus have fully traceability from the ‘field to the plate’, we try and use as much locally sourced produce as possible and use a  range of Red Tractor meat, sustainable fish caught produce,  along with other  local sources products, a large percentage of rainforest fair trade  tea and coffee are also used.   Our menus also offer a good range of healthy choices.

“We are very proud of the food choices we provide for our patients and continually work with our suppliers, dieticians and patient representatives to ensure our meals are healthy, high quality and what patients want to eat.”

The event will be held on Wednesday 19th April, 10.00 am – 12.00 noon in the Café Royal, The Royal Oldham Hospital, Oldham.

The event is free and is one of a series of ‘Medicine for Members’ events arranged to give the public and the Trust’s public members a greater insight into their local hospital and the services it provides. So far, more than 12,500 people have signed up to become Trust members.
