Come dine with us! – Tasting sessions at The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust
THE Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is inviting staff, visitors, FT members and the public to taste some of the food served to our patients on the hospital wards.
The tasting sessions will be an opportunity for staff and visitors to give on-the-spot feedback on the quality and presentation of the food the Trust serves and will also enable us to showcase our current menus, range of dishes and special diets that we offer. We hope to show the initiatives we have introduced and highlight the improvements that have been made over recent years.
The free invitation is to sample current dishes on offer to patients as well as potential new additions to the extensive menu. The taster sessions will take place in the main hospital restaurants on:-

Feedback from those who take part will be vital in providing an independent assessment of the quality of the food available for patients and assisting the catering staff with future menu choices.
Pam Miller, deputy director of support services said: “Nutrition is such a key part of patient care; good nutrition supports faster healing and recovery so patients can leave hospital quicker. It helps to encourage patients to have a good nutritional intake if the choice of food on offer is appealing and appetising. This is an ideal opportunity for us to involve patients and visitors in deciding what food they would like to see on the menu.”
Catering staff use the kitchens to provide over 2,500 nutritious patient meals a day. In just one typical day over 1,200 pints of milk and 250 loaves of bread are used and 1,200 sandwiches made. Fresh fruit and vegetables at the Trust come from a local supplier.
The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has a number of different menus, including; multiple allergy, gluten free, kosher and Maternity Pennine Cuisine, as well as puree menus for patients who have difficulty swallowing. We have also been doing a lot of work to improve the food we offer to children and took part in BBC1’s Operation Hospital Food programme with chef James Martin.
PLACE inspections and patient surveys are routinely carried out and wastage is monitored so that we can detect unpopular meals and there are also regular nutritional checks on the meals we provide.
The ‘Come Dine With Us’ sessions are part of the ‘Medicine for Members’ events held regularly at our four hospital sites (The Royal Oldham Hospital, North Manchester and Fairfield General Hospitals and Rochdale Infirmary), to give the public, staff and the Pennine Acute Trust’s Foundation Trust members the opportunity to learn more about the services at PAHNT.
