Frequently Asked Questions
I’m free to volunteer in the school/college holidays, can I volunteer?
No unfortunately not. We expect a minimum commitment of one year from people who apply to become a volunteer. We do not offer short term volunteering (less than 12 months) due to the timescale of recruitment and the financial implications.
I need a placement for my college course can I volunteer?
No unfortunately not. Volunteering is not a work experience placement. It is a long term commitment which requires your time to benefit patients, not to gain work experience. For information on work experience placements, click here.
I want to shadow a nurse or a doctor, is this possible?
No unfortunately not. Volunteering does not offer this, the trust does offer short term clinical insight to students planning a pursue a career in healthcare – If you are interested please email email@example.com
What skills and experience do I need?
Good communication skills are required, along with reliability and a positive attitude. Other skills will depend upon the role you want to do within the organisation.
How soon will I be able to volunteer?
You will be able to volunteer once we are in receipt of the relevant documentation, including police checks (DBS), two references, occupational health assessment and other required ID. You will also need to have completed both your local induction and e-learning programme before you can start. The entire recruitment process can take approximately 2 – 3 months.
How often do I need to volunteer?
The minimum we ask is 2-3 hours a week. However, we appreciate that some volunteers want to commit more time and so do this 2-3 times a week. We ask that you commit on a regular basis so it’s beneficial to us both.
Do I need to wear a uniform?
Yes. All volunteers are issued with a Trust polo shirt and ID badge. A £10 refundable deposit is required to cover this cost before you start to volunteer.
Can you provide me with a reference?
No unfortunately we cannot provide personal character references for any volunteer. We can however provide a statement that you are a volunteer along with your start date and area, and how many hours you have volunteered for.
