Who is the service for?

For children (0 to 16 years) registered with Bury General Practitioners or attending Bury pre-school provisions or Bury schools. Young people up to the age of 18th birthday are also seen if he or she is attending a special school. Referrals are accepted from General Practitioners, Health Visitors, children’s community nursing team, community learning disability team, community paediatricians from neighbouring Trusts, consultant paediatricians from Central Manchester Children’s Hospital, Children and young People in Care Team (CYPIC), Bury Adoption and Fostering services and Social Care.

What does the service provide?

The community paediatric service offers assessment of complex needs in children with delayed development via outpatient assessments by medical teams followed by multidisciplinary assessments if appropriate, in the child development centre. The multidisciplinary team offers physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, vision or hearing assessments depending on the child’s needs.  An educational psychologist from Bury Local education authority also contributes in the assessment if appropriate. The medical team work includes the medical assessment part of the statutory assessment of children with special educational needs (SEN) when requested by Bury Local Education Authority; school visits when requested by school nursing teams; initial or ongoing medical assessments of all children referred by children and young people in care team (CYPIC) and the medical assessment of children referred by social care for adoption. The medical team also offers Botulinum Toxin injections for spasticity management.

When is the service available?

The service is available 09.00 -17.00 hours, Monday to Friday throughout the year except Bank Holidays.

The service is provided from several locations:

Fairfield General Hospital, Rochdale Old Road, Bury BL9 7TD  :

  • Children’s  Outpatient Department (COPD)
  • Child Development Centre (CDC)

Various community locations in Bury :

These include various health centres, primary care centres, children’s centres, schools, nurseries, special schools and special units.
